Know the size of the prize
Florette Hyman, Marketing Consultant at the KLBD is devoted to certifying thousands of products to cater to the fast-growing niche for kosher in the ethnic and speciality food market. The kosher food market is estimated to be $12bn in the US alone. Florette explains why this is so; ‘kosher certification is a question of trust. The logo is a hallmark of our pledge to promote healthy products, appealing not just to Jewish shoppers but to a widening audience concerned with the origins of their food, including allergy sufferers, vegetarians, vegans and Halal consumers.’
Don’t wait to be asked
Veetee Rice, winner of the Best New British Product award at ANUGA 2007, was approached by an Israeli buyer at the show. Within two weeks its new Dine-In rice product was certified by KLBD and the company were able to begin selling to Israel immediately. Florette comments ‘a number of Veetee products were kosher certified, so we were able to process their application for the Dine-In certification quickly. Kosher certification is a valuable opportunity to maximise export sales with minimum expenditure, so my advice is don’t miss this valuable opportunity.’ Meet Florette at the FFB pavilion at ISM.
Explore your new market
Your product might be the first of its type to secure kosher certification, giving your company a head start in the kosher sector. Isle of Bute’s non dairy cheese, ‘Sheesy’ created a stir in the kosher market as a new product. ‘The kosher dietary laws forbid eating milk and meat in the same meal, and the success of this cheese was instantaneous’ Florette says ‘I asked the four key buyers in the UK to sample the product and all them ordered it. Kosher certification is an immediate link to the kosher market and its benefits are enormous.’
The next step
KLBD certification simply requires information about your products’ ingredients, manufacturing processes and equipment. The organisation has a database of over 100,000 ingredients with kosher certification. The logo will be used on your products, as well as listed in ‘The Really Kosher Food Guide’ of which 8,000 copies are printed annually, and in ‘The Kosher Nosh Guide’ of which a phenomenal 80,000 copies are distributed.
Kosher certification then allows easy access to the US market through KLBD’s annual pavilion at Kosherfest, the largest dedicated kosher exhibition in the world.
