Market insights to grow your business

Austria: hungry for innovation

British exports to Austria grew by 15% in 2007 to almost £35m. The affluent Austrian market offers opportunities for such product categories as seafood, ethnic food, traditional British fine foods as well as premium products.

Austria Roadshow 24-25 March 2009

FFB’s Austria Roadshow, taking place in Vienna on 24-25 March 2009, will provide insights into the Austrian market and give you the opportunity to discuss your products with key Austrian distributors and buyers.

British food categories which had particular success in Austria in 2007 included Miscellaneous Food – comprising soups, ambient sauces and ice cream – exports of which grew by 49% to about £9m; meat, up 8.2% to some £3m, and Fish and Seafood, up 18.9% to around £2m.

Premium, organic and health food opportunities

The four leading food retailers in Austria – REWE, SPAR, Hofer (Aldi) and Tengelmann – have grown over recent years by expanding their chilled, organic, functional and health food ranges. They all have focussed more strongly on their private-label ranges, too. Particularly the organic food market is expanding in Austria.

Patricia Czerniak, Managing Director of FFB (Germany), which is organising the Austrian Roadshow, commented: “With the right introductions, British companies have great potential in Austria, particularly given the demand for premium, speciality, convenience and healthy foods in which the UK excels.”

The Austrian Roadshow will incorporate guided tours of the major Austrian stores, a presentation on the Austrian market and an opportunity to meet with key Austrian buyers and distributors.
