Harness Chinese opportunities at FHC China 2008

Beer, biscuits and cheese are just some of the British products with high potential in China, according to Chinese buyers at UKTI’s Chinese ‘Meet the Buyer’ event in Yorkshire on 10 April. FFB’s British pavilion at FHC China 2008 will enable British producers to take advantage of the opportunities in the booming Chinese market.

FHC China 2008 will take place in Shanghai on 4-6 December. Elsa Fairbanks, FFB’s Client Development Manager for the north of England and UKTI’s Food and Drink Sector Specialist  in Yorkshire & Humber, was impressed by the enthusiasm of the Chinese buyers at the UKTI event. “The buyers from China were really interested in the products and companies we introduced them too. There’s a growing momentum in Chinese knowledge of and interest in British products – so much so that we’re considering taking a specific Yorkshire stand on the British pavilion at FHC China 2008.”

The buyers identified a number of particular categories of interest:

  • Beer – to take advantage of the good opportunities for UK beers, companies need to find a way of consolidating shipments as volumes will be small at the beginning.
  • Biscuits – there is excellent potential for high quality British biscuits with a strong brand behind them.
  • Cheese – the buyers saw fantastic potential for branded British cheeses with a good story to tell.
  • Taste and Health – these categories are very important to the Chinese consumer
  • Sugar Confectionery – there is a lot of potential to develop the market for products with good presentation.
